Passage: Mark 3:7-19
Returning to our study in the Gospel of Mark this morning, we come to a text that sets up an interesting contrast. Now 18 months into Jesus’ earthly ministry, he has alienated the Jewish religious leaders to the point that unthinkable alliances are created with the sole purpose of destroying him. At the same time, Jesus has attracted an amazing following from all over the region, although this group appears more concerned about what Jesus can do for their felt needs rather than their spiritual needs. Then, there is a gaggle of misfits that Jesus appoints as his apostles (or “sent ones”), none of whom are particularly impressive or qualified. These same groups exist today and a little self-examination will help each of us to honestly evaluate which one we belong to.
